What is the Protein Transition?

The protein transition is a shift toward sustainable, diverse protein sources that reduce environmental impact and strengthen food security. This includes:

  • Alternative plant-based proteins
  • Fermentation and algae-based innovations
  • Unconventional animal proteins

With growing demand, it’s no longer a trend—it’s an economic opportunity. The Protein Transition Map NL highlights a sector worth €881 million in production value, employing over 3,500 people across the Netherlands.

About the Protein Transition Map

This map was developed by Foodvalley NL, Transitiecoalitie Voedsel, and the Ministry of Agriculture, with support from 11 Dutch provinces. It is part of a larger initiative to measure and enhance the environmental, health, and economic value of the protein shift.

The Protein Community

he Protein Transition Map NL was launched in 2024 and initiated by The Protein Community (TPC). Founded by Foodvalley in 2017, TPC connects startups and corporates worldwide that are accelerating the shift to alternative proteins.

With over 150 active partner companies, The Protein Community fosters innovation and business growth through:
